Hot Water Beach
and Cathedral Cove

Friday, 2nd March 2007

This beach was recommended by a friend so I paid it a short visit before going to Cathedral Cove.

Naturally heated mineral water bubbles up from deep within the earth to emerge through golden sand at the appropriately named Hot Water Beach.

Cathedral Cove is Marine Reserve is in the southern part of Mercury Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula.

For two hours either side of low tide you can dig in the sand for hot spring water . . . .

and make your own spa pool

Just digging by your feet into the sand it is possible to find water so hot that you cannot keep your feet in it

Cathedral Cove is so beautiful and special that it has been chosen as one of the filming location for
The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The Cathedral is a giant arched cavern . . .

accessible only at low tide . . .

and has a beach on either side

The rock stacks show . . .

erosion at high tide
